Minley Manor

Minley Manor, a beautiful stately home outside London in Surrey, was a major base for the show’s production – in particular, many of the interior scenes relating to Lucy’s time with Jacobs & Co were shot there. Unfortunately, though, it’s not easy to visit: it’s a private hire wedding venue, so not open to the public, and is situated out in the countryside away from public transport. It’s also set back from a fast main road with poor pedestrian access and is surrounded by Ministry of Defence land, so it’s very difficult even to catch a glimpse of it. For all these reasons, we don’t recommend a visit.

The main reason we know about the filming there is via reports and pictures from Jonathan and Gina, who did a day-long set visit during shooting. We were also able to match various locations (for example the haunted school and Jacobs’s office) to promotional photos on the manor’s website, some of which are included in our gallery.

We think the following scenes were shot there: Jacobs’s office and classroom; Lucy’s childhood bedroom; the haunted schoolroom; and Lucy’s rejection at Rotwell. We also think the walk through the fields to the haunted mill, and the exterior of the mill itself, were shot on the manor’s estate. It’s likely some of the other Jacobs-era scenes in the episode 1 flashback (such as Norrie’s bedroom, for example) were filmed there too!
