A dimly lit street scene featuring a vintage shop front called 'Winkman's Emporium', with large windows and a small vehicle parked nearby.

Winkman’s Emporium

Winkman’s Emporium or shop is in Bloomsbury in the book version. The TV version is actually south of the River Thames near Borough Market. There are a number of street scenes as well. Some are close to the shop, others are some distance away.

Book Version:

In TWS, Winkman’s shop (aka the Bloomsbury Antique Emporium) is described as being in “Owl Yard”, a little lane between Coptic Street and Museum Street. Owl Yard itself doesn’t exist, but the two picturesque side streets do, just a block away from the British Museum, and it’s easy to imagine Lucy in her True Hauntings T-shirt and Lockwood in his Bermuda shorts, masquerading as tourists, wandering along them on a summer day (and being unceremoniously shown the door later on). There are also plenty of little Bloomsbury-like shops in both streets that one could imagine being suitable, apparently respectable premises for the Winkmans. Nearby in the area are the SOAS Library, aka the British Archives in the show, and Store Street, location for a street scene in episode 2.

Episode 5:

“You know you can talk to me, Lockwood …”
Fleeing from near death at the hands of Winkman, in this scene Lucy and Lockwood wind up on a street not far from the location in Southwark that serves as Winkman’s shop. Glasshill Street is a quiet road in a quiet part of the borough, distinctively overshadowed in the middle by its big, high-sided metal railway bridge carrying a line snaking between the Victorian warehouses and newer blocks of flats at roof height. As you stand looking at it you can hear Lockwood almost opening up to Lucy – almost, but not quite …

‘We’ll never get in there. Let’s come back first thing. You can pretend to be a customer …’
Most of the walk-and-talk scene in which a nervous Lucy tries to dissuade Lockwood from breaking into Winkman’s is shot on Conlan Street in Kensington, but the last part, when they get to the end of the street and stand surveying Winkman’s, shot from behind, happened here on O’Meara Street in Southwark – which is indeed just across the road from RK Burt & Co, the building that ‘played’ Winkman’s shop. There’s even a nice reference to the Winkman’s scene as portrayed in the books, when Lucy suggests Lockwood could “pretend to be a customer” – that’s exactly what happens in The Whispering Shadow, when Lucy and Lockwood visit the shop in disguise as tourists.
