Although it’s not quite in the same place as the book location, and differs slightly in appearance from how Aickmere’s is described, the Peter Jones store on Sloane Square is indeed a hulking presence that takes up an entire block, and is Chelsea’s pre-eminent department store.

It has been confirmed as Jonathan’s inspiration, and not only that, but at one of the LockNation meet-ups Joe said that if they were ever to film season 2, the store “had to be” the location for Aickmere’s. It even has the kind of towering atrium that can easily be imagined holding a giant tree!

Although the store is called “Peter Jones”, it actually belongs to the John Lewis Partnership and is a standard John Lewis department store inside. Mr Jones sold his business to Mr Lewis, the founder of the partnership, in the 1910s and the company has (in line with many John Lewis stores) retained its non-standard name ever since. The distinctive building is the second to have been on the site, designed in the 1930s and now a listed building.

John Lewis stores are quite posh and pricey, but there is a nice cafe on the top floor where you can have a light lunch or cup of tea, and look down to the floors below (hopefully they won’t be collapsing into the basement in a whirlwind of psychic energy).
