Haunted Mill
The external views of the haunted mill, approached across fields, were shot in the grounds of Minley Manor in Surrey, but the interior scenes were filmed here in Wapping Hydraulic Power Station; an imposing old building, disused for decades and a slightly spooky, in the Victorian docklands setting of Wapping (it’s surrounded by towering old wharves, now mainly converted into flats).
The power station itself is an interesting relic of an abandoned Victorian technology: mains hydraulic power – that is to say, water at high pressure pumped through a network of pipes across London to power industrial machinery. This idea was being developed at the same time as mains electricity and mains gas in the 19th century, and at one point was very successful. Wapping was one of a network of five pumping stations sucking water out of the Thames and keeping it whizzing around most of central London. It was also the last to close – amazingly, in 1977.
Lucy, Norrie and the Jacobs & Co enter in the machine room – in the dark, but you can just see the machinery, which is still present today, and the doorway where the ghosts lurk is at the other end of the hall, very recognisable still by the two big water pipes on either side of it.
The power station only occasionally opens for events – there have been vintage fairs recently – but it’s worth keeping a look-out , as it’s a very interesting place to visit (and you might pick up a nice antique ornament!)
